Research Profile
My scholarship is focused on the public aspects of emerging technologies. I explore the
relationships between innovative tech, its political economy, and democratic principles and
institutions. I am interested in exploring both sides of the algorithm: How to regulate emerging
technologies and how emerging technologies regulate us. I explore how data-driven technologies
challenge and transform legal and political organizing principles; Which infrastructures can
ensure just, secure, inclusive, and democratic digital ecosystems; and how novel technologies
can help to materialize and support democratic principles in new and innovative ways. A unique
combination of legal and political theory expertise and extensive research collaborations with
computer scientists enable my research to frame new questions and develop frameworks at the
forefront of technological and ethical innovation. My articles were published in leading journals
and appeared in various syllabi at top-tier universities. Additionally, I have developed innovative
courses with novel teaching methodologiesin the emerging field of Computer Science and Ethics.

o From Regulating Speech to Regulating the Engines of Public Discourse (The research
project examines the role and characteristics of constructive public discourse. These
characteristics are used as a litmus test to detect structural failures of existing social

media, and to develop an infrastructure and policies that aim to enable an online
democratic public arena).
o Democratizing Data Governance (The starting point of this project is that data is
ontologically collective and relational, and therefore, its governance should be collective
and relational as well. Based on political theory, the project points out the pros and cons
of users' direct participation in data management and examines the institutions required
to reduce the failures of users' direct democratic participation).

Teaching Experience
I have developed a series of innovative courses designed for different audiences from different
academic backgrounds, dealing with innovative technologies' legal, ethical, and social impacts. The

courses map and analyze the current theoretical, social, and political challenges arising from data-
driven technologies and explore how ethics and law address these challenges. The courses are

based on innovative teaching methodologies: discussions in various formats, analysis of test cases
and their connection to theory, and joint research creative tasks. The courses provide students
with knowledge and familiarity with the most current innovations in the field. The courses receive
extremely high teaching evaluations, and usually, there is a long waiting list, to participate in those
courses.
